Walk through Harlem history with acclaimed filmmaker

The Harlem Renaissance was a period of unprecedented creativity in the 1920s and 1930s, when a people—and a nation—redefined itself. Celebrating Black art, literature, and music, the movement came to serve as a symbol of the struggle for civil rights and economic equality. On this walk, I’ll share the stories behind the Renaissance’s most meaningful sites. • We’ll start at the landmark Apollo Theater, where so many seeds planted during the movement came to fruition. • As we walk through the neighborhood, we’ll delve into the Harlem Renaissance, which began a century ago, and its ongoing resonance. • We’ll visit the Langston Hughes House, where the poet wrote some of his most influential works. • Finally, we’ll connect with James Baldwin’s origins by visiting his childhood street. By the end of our walk, you’ll have a richer understanding of the artists and thinkers who drove the Harlem Renaissance, and of the impact the movement continues to have on American culture.

New York City's mahjong scene has been blowing up recently, but you have to know where to look to find yourself at a table. Join me in my Brooklyn photo studio, where I’ve gathered many friends to learn and play mahjong, and I’ll teach you the ins and outs of this ancient game. • Once you settle in, I’ll pour tea for everyone and tell you a little bit about the game's history. Then I’ll walk you through the basic game—aka chicken hand—rules. • Next, start up a game! I’m prepared to teach total beginners, answering questions and offering guidance throughout. If folks catch on quick or already have some familiarity, I can teach / play the more advanced Hong Kong points-style game. • As you play, I’ll document our gathering with a 3D film camera that creates unique, holographic GIFs. You’ll leave with the mahjong basics, a holographic portrait, and recommendations on where to find some great Asian eats in this part of Brooklyn, if competition has whetted your appetite. ***Please note: the experience requires at least three booked guests, as mahjong requires 4 players!

The Lower East Side has a rich music history and heavy concentration of record shops with hard-to-find records. Join me in visting some of my favorites. • We’ll meet in the East Village, at a former landmark record destination. Where I’ll share some music history on the neighborhood, nightlife and vinyl community. • Then head to Ergot Records, where I’ll share a little about my work as a DJ and record shop owner, and then we’ll start digging! • As we explore the neighborhood, I’ll recommend other great shops and music destinations (based on your taste), and talk about how the landscape of record stores (& neighborhoods) in this city have evolved. • We’ll end up at Duty Free Records, where I’ll walk you through my curated collection. Then we’ll have a private listening session—diving into to the albums you’ve just picked up, some of my favorites, or just vibe to whatever you’d like (vinyl preferred). You’ll leave knowing where to pick up new treasures from the shops we visit, plus my tried & true recommendations of where to have the best digs, drinks, bites, and musical experiences.

Our life philosophy is EAT ANYTHING, ANYWHERE. We like eating some of the best foods, in odd places. We will meet on the docks of East Boston where we will tear into and slurp dozens of local oysters, harvested by our oyster farmer friends, while looking over the harbor and skyline. You will learn how to properly shuck an oyster and will go home with a shucking knife of your own. The memories will be in the details. We will set up in "flash-mob" "pop-up" style along the water. Expect the unexpected. Other things to note This is an outdoor experience. To get to the dock, I encourage you to take a water taxi! There are several pick-up points and I am happy to help arrange this for you.

It’s a beautiful time to be out in nature. I can lead a two or more person group at a reduced rate. If you don't see a time available write me and we find at a time that is good for you! We will meet at Canalside Experiences, (706 waterloo Geneva Road) and then take a 1.5 hour paddle of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, an extension of the Erie Canal, that connects Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Along the way we will look for local wildlife .... bald eagles are a possibility, along with hunting Osprey, Great Blue Heron, and a variety of sparrows, swallows and warblers. Beavers are resident along the canal and we will see evidence of their work.The waters are calm with very little boat traffic. It's a great way to see the Finger Lakes! This is one of my favorite places to paddle and I look forward to showing it to you! I am a retired teacher and have over 20 years kayaking, paddleboarding and nature watching in the Finger Lakes. I monitor blue bird boxes and help with bird surveys at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. You don't need any kayak experience to join but it's preferred if guests are comfortable around the water and can swim or float comfortably in the water. -CPR/First Aid Certified

We are Liberty Hill Farm, in Rochester, Vermont! Tours run Fridays through Mondays, at 9 am. Our farm tours are scheduled to coincide with daily chores to allow guests the opportunity to experience daily farm life. Guests will be able to watch the cow milking process and even try their hand at milking! From there, we will explain the journey from cow to milk jug. Guests will learn about the different ages and stages of the dairy cow, from birth through adulthood. We will meet, pet, and even feed baby calves, explore the barns, and meet kitties. Every tour is adjusted to meet the needs and interests of our guests. We encourage our guests to participate hands-on, and encourage questions and ideas! We simply love to share our love of farming and our animals with others! ***All proceeds from our farm tours go directly to our nonprofit organization, Liberty Hill Center for Agricultural Education. *** Other things to note: I only book about a month in advance, so if your preferred date does not appear, check back! Tours will be held rain or shine! I only cancel if temperatures are below zero, so please plan accordingly! It is up to the guest to check weather reports. No refunds will be given for guests canceling the morning of the tours for weather-related issues. We love all animals, but cannot host guests’ pets, for the safety and well-being of our animals!

After arrival and introductions, we'll start the process by showing you how to properly slash your dough and get it into the oven. this will allow our first loaves to bake and cool in time for sampling, because who wants to attend a sourdough class and not get to eat any of it? :) Next, we'll begin the process of mixing ingredients, going over the recipe and process. during the periods when the dough will be resting ill conduct a demonstration for a fun live cultured beverage, you can make at home or simply enjoy it during the baking class. Since there is so much time involved in producing a loaf, I'll be moving along with the steps as quickly as we can and spending most of the time between processes answering questions and explaining the why behind the techniques. classes typically last between 3-4 hours so light refreshments will be served throughout the class. You will leave class with, starter, instruction printout, a loaf of bread to bake the next and a bread proofing basket. Other things to note Let me know if you have any food allergies.

To many, the world of Hasidic Jews is shrouded in mystery and secrecy—well, not anymore. On this experience, you get to see first hand the daily lives, rituals, and customs of the Hasidic community, guided by a member of the community and being able to access places seemingly closed off and hidden to the outsider. An opportunity to be able to ask any questions about the Jewish faith, culture, and philosophy. We kick off the experience inside a Hasidic home, and learning about what it takes to keep a Kosher home. Then its off to the streets of Crown Heights, starting with exploring the world famous “770” Synagogue, getting a glimpse into the hustle and bustle of daily prayer services. Next stop is a Jewish scribe, seeing up close the intricate details involved in producing the Torah Scrolls. Followed by a walk down the avenue, visiting the local shops, and seeing the traditions dating back to the early 1800’s. If you don’t see availability for when you would like to join, please message us and we will try to accommodate. The experience will be hosted by Yoni or Mayer. The experience continues rain, snow or shine (just come prepared).
